On a day eight years ago, Jibanananda Das

নিয়ে গেছে তারে;

মরিবার হল তার সাধ। বধূ শুয়ে ছিল পাশে - শিশুটিও ছিল;

আধার ঘুজির বুকে ঘুমায় এবার;

তবুও তো পেঁচা জাগে;

রক্ত ক্লেদ বসা থেকে রোদ্রে ফের উড়ে যায় মাছি;
অধিকার করে আছে ইহাদের মন;

তোমার অসহ্য বোধ হলো;
নারীর প্রণয়ে ব্যর্থ হয় নাই;
দিয়েছে জানিতে;
এ-জীবন কোনদিন কেঁপে ওঠে নাই;

নারীর হৃদয়-প্রেম-শিশু-গৃহ-নয় সবখানি;
খেলা করে;
ক্লান্ত - ক্লান্ত করে;
সেই ক্লান্তি নাই;

রে দিবো কালীদহে বেনোজলে পার;

On a day eight years ago

by Jibanananda Das

I hear they have taken him
to that place where they cut bodies open;
last night – in the darkness of Spring.

When the new moon had set
he felt like dying a little; his woman by his side, his child too
there was love, even hope by moonlight, then what
spectre called to him from the moon? Why did he wake up?
Or perhaps he had not slept well for many a day.
Perhaps he had wanted to sleep in the room
Where they cut up bodies.

Crumpled up like a rat with bloody foam about its lips,
now he sleeps inside a container
to wake up no more.

He will wake up no more
nor ever feel again that deep pain
of having to wake up, again and again.
That constant burden will no longer weigh him down.
These must have been the words he heard
In that strange darkness after the moon set
just by his window,
from the lips of intrusive silence.

And yet the owl waits, awake
as the ancient frog croaks for a few more minutes of life,
in the hopes of seeing another dawn, for the love of imagined warmth.
I can feel in the dense anonymity of this darkness
the unforgiving opposition of a mosquito net
against a mosquito that loves life force even as it waits out the dark.

A fly rises from blood and gore to return to sunlight;
how many times have we seen insects ride golden waves of light?
As if they own the sky, as if a radiant life
is all they think about.
After the moon set, you walked to the tree
a noose in your hand, solitary as ever
knowing well that the life of an insect is theirs alone
never to be known by songbird or man.

That thick branch there,
did it not protest? Did the fireflies not crowd close
As they rubbed against the masses of golden bloom
Did they not?
Did the ancient blind owl not fly down and say
'Has the ancient moon crone been swept away in the tide?
Great!
Now, let’s catch a few mice -'
Did it not bring you this grave news?

In the autumn of your life, the sweet scent of life’s ripening harvest on the air
became unbearable to you;
But do you feel better now,
in the dank clammy morgue
bloodied lips like a crushed mouse.
But still, listen
Even though this is a dead man’s tale; he never
failed to win a woman’s love;
Nor was he unfulfilled
in his married existence
as time evolved, he found a wife
who allowed him to learn
of her sweetness and his.
He never had to know of cold sorrow
that winter that chills the truly poor.
And that is why
in that room he lies
face up, looking at the sky from a table.

I know, I know,
A woman’s heart, love, a child, a home – this is not all;
not money, not fame, nor prosperity -
there is another endangered wonder
that lives and plays
deep in the blood within.
It exhausts us,
so tired – it tires us out;
in the morgue
there is none of that
And that is why
in that room he lies
face up, looking at the sky from a table.

And yet I too see each night,
an old owl alighting on the branch.
Blinking its eyes as if to say,
'Has the ancient moon crone been swept away in the tide?
Great!
Now, let’s catch a few mice -'

Ancient grandmother, you do amaze me!
I want to grow old just like you and help
the old moon to cross the tides down at the creek;
Then, and only then will we go, having used up all our reserves of life.

The Patchwork Quilt by Jasimuddin

-গাঁও যেন ফাঁকা ফাঁকা, হেথায় হোথায় গাছ ;

ওই গাঁর এক মেয়ের প্রেমে গলায় পরে ফাঁসি ;

-গাঁও -গাঁও মেশামেশি কেবল সুরে সুরে ;

মাঝখানে তার ধূলায় দোলে দুখান দীঘল বাট ;

In between my friend and me lies a river of honey and milk
I would fly there in a trice, but fate did not give me wings.
                                                          ----
Cowherd’s song

A village here, over there another ---- a vast meadow in between,
Rice stalks nod their heads, reading out stories of our times.
This village feels so empty, a lone tree here and there;
with the farming folk’s mud huts hiding behind them.
In that other village, trees grow dense, a kohl darkened eye,
Gracing the houses with loving shade.

This village gazes at them, in reply that village sighs;
No one knows how long they will keep on doing this!
In between sparkles the black depth of the Joli,
Fastened to her breast a hundred lotus bloom.
A path leads from each village down to the lake
They smile as they meet to toss more blooms into its arms!
Some have said, a farmer of this village in days long gone by,
Lost his heart to a girl from the other village over there;
He was all alone on the path, going over there in haste,
She was coming down his way, anklets marking her steps.

When they met at the lake, they seemed to lose their way
They both now sleep in its arms, lotus stems about their limbs.
Who knows whether their garlands gave birth,
To the hundred flowers dancing on the water today.
A watery mark of love upon the forehead of this earth,
Lives on like a sign of the love this village feels for the other over there!
Birds of every colour seem to flock to the water,
Together they sing a myriad songs.
When the sun sets for the day, birds fly home
Some coming to sleep here, others visiting those darkened groves.
People from both villages come to bathe
In the waters of Joli they play.

Between the two villages lie --- the call of water,
Still it never feels like we are from different places.
The waves that women fill their pots from over there,
Are the ones that come and wash the banks here.
Late in the night, a sleepless farmer playing a tune on his flute,
Gives voice to the secret pain of a woman from over there.
When the boatman here sings his songs,
A woman pauses in dawn light there, her heart catching his call.
These two villages are united only in song and longing;
In many other things they walk along, sadly far apart.

The people of both villages gang up and fight,
Everyone knows this for a fact.
In their bid to be supreme
much red has been bled into the waters.
At least there is a green field between the two villages at war,
slicing through its heart two dusty paths;
About it flow the unending colours of the nodding waves of rice,
A wind from this village sways the boat that sails over there.

The Rooster's Song by Sukanta Bhattacharya

তারপর শুরু হল তাঁর আঁস্তাকুড়ে আনাগোনা;

ময়লা ছেঁড়া ন্যাকড়া পরা দু'তিনটে মানুষ;

ধব্‌ধবে সাদা দামী কাপড়ে ঢাকা খাবার টেবিলে ;

The Rooster’s song
Sukanto Bhattacharya
One rooster suddenly found itself some shelter
In one corner of a huge mansion,
In a pile of old packing crates
It set up house with a couple of hens.
Even though it now had shelter,
It did not have food enough to make it happy.
It let out piercing calls of protest
Till its throat hurt,
From dawn till dusk.
But no sympathy was to be had from the deaf bricks of that house.

It then decided to go looking in the rubbish;
Amazing! There, every day he found
The most excellent food that others had thrown away.

Then one day, came someone to stake a claim
A few dirty ragged men kept alive only by hunger;
Now the weaker rooster went hungry once again.

Food, glorious food, just some, not too much!
The desperate rooster tried to find food,
Inside the mansion’s gates a couple of times
But every time there was someone to drive him out.
The little rooster could only dream
Of all the food that must surely be within!

Then one day, he really did manage to find his way in,
Straight to where the food was
On the table laid with a snowy white cloth;
But this time, not to eat
But to be eaten.
