Conversation 32 Purnendu Pattrea

Conversation 32

The gift that I have brought you
Can you tell me what it is?
Rainbows? What! Even if I wanted
Can anyone reach them?
Mines full of glittering mica? Blued mountain peaks?
Am I a Birla or a Tata?
I have brought you a bowl of sandalwood
Ground from my own blood.

Ek MuTho Jonaki, Purnendu Pattrea

A Fistful of Fireflies

With just a handful of fireflies
Darkness impresses in the absence of the sun.
In that magical glow
Each youth becomes a red dirt hill,
Each young woman a shining river of gold.
As soon as the snake charmer lifts the lid, a handful of fireflies appear
As soon as I open a popular book, the same fireflies.
With just a handful of fireflies,
Darkness makes us believe in the absence of the sun.
From the podium a politician flings a handful of fireflies
To the ragged applause of someone or the other.
Thirty poets recite their poetry over thirty days in a hall named for our Bard
Briefly glowing in firefly light, nothing more, nothing less.
Great leaders assemble in a UNESCO roundtable,
To create a spectacle like Konark or Athens
By the light of a handful of fireflies,
Wherever you see cracked walls and thatch, from Africa to the Himalayas.
This is how the darkness of the last seven centuries
Shows its sleight of hand by the light of a few fireflies.

Kathopokathan 1/Conversation 1 by Purnendu Pattrea( An Extract)

Why are your eyes red?
Were you caught in the rain?
Why are the veins in my hands blue?
They got burned.
You said you would write to me today,
Have you got it? Great! Many, many thanks.
What is this you give me? Just an empty envelope!
Where did the letter go?
It blew away you say?
All the words in my letter too
Washed away in the rain.
Today the water knows many a trick.
Drenching the clothes on some
And ravaging the houses of others,
Knocking on their doors with obscene eagerness.
Once we were made homeless by the same water.
Pillows, mattress, bed, pots, pans and plates
All grist to the open mouthed shark.
We were floating on a putrid tide,
Brother to algae and the choking weed.
Did I anger you with this talk of water?
Let us not talk about water then
Let’s discuss life instead.

Lal Phoring/The Red Dragon Fly

Chasing after a floating dragon fly,
Ruby red its gauzy wings,
I wasted a whole morning and a day
Amongst some other things.

On a Datura leaf here it sits,
There in the Jasmine! Look there, it flits!
When it flew high into the pomegranate crown
My hopes of capture came crashing down
.

The Ghentu bush is dressed like a bride,
Each flower a puff of pure pearly white.
Suddenly I see, quiet as can be -
The blood red dragon fly, a jewel for me.

This poem comes from a collection of children's verse by Purnendu Pattrea, called Amaar Chelebela. He was a very talented writer and film maker. The translation is by no means perfect, but I hope it brings a sense of the fun Pattrea brought to much of his work for children.
